Over the last few weeks I have been conscious of how quickly the aging process has taken over our friend, confidant and family member Chuck. Chuck is was a 13 1/2 year old Golden Retriever and became a member of our family when he was nothing more than a 6 week old bundle of fluff.
During his time with us he has run with my horses and hidden from the cows. He has ‘put up’ the pheasants that nested in our hay paddocks and allowed two orphan kittens to snuggle into him at night.
When we moved from our farm and headed south Chuck became a huge fan of the beach that is found at the end of the road on which we live. There he became a puppy again, this time ‘putting up’ the seagulls and even trying to hold a conversation with a wayward seal or two.
Once I opened our shop from our home Chuck became a bit of a welcoming committee (along with Polly, our very noisy Foxy).
Moving here so many thousands of miles away from my circle of friends Chuck became my constant companion. He heard my woes and gave me company and now he’s gone.
Chuck finally got laid to rest yesterday, he’s left a huge hole in my life, in fact he’s left a huge hole in all of our lives here at By Hoki Quilts.
Polly has been outside a number of times just wandering around looking for him, and Trouble, one of our two cats finally got put outside at 4 this morning after she was roaming the house meowing for her friend.
I apologise for this post being so long and without a mention of sewing. DH has lost his ‘buddy’ but I’ve lost a friend. Our gentleman Chuck has left us and it’s all just too sad.
I am so sorry for your loss of your dear pet Chuck , our pets become such a huge part of our family and loosing them is really tough , take care and hugs Sheila
ReplyDeleteMany hugs to you Miche'le...its just horrible loosing your confidant and best friend. What a beautiful gentle looking doggie he was :) (((Hugs))) Hugs Vicki x
ReplyDeleteI truly feel for you Miche'le. Our pets become so much a part of the family that it does indeed leave a huge hole. I still miss our Max that we had for nine wonderful years. Only a few months later we rescued a puppy from the humane society and now she will soon be nine years old. I hope she will make it a few more years.
ReplyDeleteWe lost our cat after 19 1/2 years. Pets do become part of the family and are certainly missed. I am sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteDear Miche'le,
ReplyDeleteI'm not a dog person, but I think from your description of Chuck I just might have liked him. A gentleman of dogs. Friendly, caring, and constant but with a bit of fun and play in him. After 13.5 years he will be so missed by you all, RIP nice dog.
Miche'le it's so hard to lose one of our beloved furry kids. Chuck was so clearly a huge part of your life and you're so lucky (as was he) to have had those 13 1/2 wonderful years together. God Bless his gentle soul, and great big hugs to you too dear one!!

Our four footed friends are family for sure. And the loss of one, it is the hardest to bear. Thoughts are with you. Take care.
ReplyDeleteIt is very hard when you lose a pet- we have had to put our previous dogs down and it was such a sad day. We still miss our former dogs even though we have another one.
